If you wake up in pain every morning, you may be sleeping on the wrong mattress. But finding a new one isn’t just a matter of heading to the mattress store and picking out the least (or most) expensive one. There are some things you need to think about before you start shopping for your new mattress. Besides your budget, and the quality of the mattress materials, it’s important to consider your sleep style.
Yes. Believe it or not, how you sleep determines the kind of mattress you should be looking for. If you’re a side sleeper who sleeps on a soft mattress, it could be the reason for your back pain. Ditto if you’re a back sleeper sleeping on too hard a mattress.
Heading for the mattress store? Here are a couple of things to help you back sleepers and side sleepers choose the right mattress.
Mattresses for back sleepers
In general, back sleepers experience less pain on specific pressure points than side sleepers do. This is because their weight is more evenly distributed, so they can often stand a firmer mattress. But support for the lower back is crucial. Too firm a mattress won’t provide the correct support for the lower back area. Too soft, and it will cause the heavier parts of the body to sink, pulling the back out of alignment.
Back sleepers should look for:
– A medium-firm mattress that provides both support and comfort
– A mattress that gives the back full contact with the surface in a uniform manner
Mattresses for side sleepers
Side sleepers may be prone to pain in the back, neck, or hips. The reason for these potential points of pain is that side sleeping on the wrong mattress can put pressure on some areas, such as the hips and shoulders, while providing little support to other parts of the body, such as the back and neck.
Side sleepers should choose:
– A mattress with conformability to contour to the curves of the body
– A mattress with enough firmness and support to relive pressure points and keep the spine, neck, and back in alignment
Memory foam, latex, and pillow tops for back and side sleepers
Latex and memory foam mattresses are great mattress options for both back and side sleepers. The memory foam gives just enough cushion to cradle body, providing relief for the back and those pressure points, but without sinking or sagging and pulling the spine out of alignment. Latex provides great support and conforms moderately to the body. Some some latex mattresses can be very firm, so many people top their latex mattresses with a pillow topper, giving themselves proper support plus luxurious comfort.
