California Kings are often thought of as the unrivaled masters of mattresses, the ace in the hole, the very peak of luxury. This is true…to a point.

California kings are a great choice for a large mattress, but they’re far from perfect. In fact, there are a number of differences between California King and regular “Eastern” King mattresses that are worth looking at. These differences extend beyond latex mattresses vs spring or platform beds vs adjustable.

We’ve put together a list of the top three differences that matter when it comes to California King vs Eastern King mattresses. Keep reading to learn the pros and cons of each and don’t forget to take a look at our selection of organic mattresses when you’re done!

Size

The most obvious difference between California King and Eastern King mattresses is the size. A California King is slightly longer and narrower than an Eastern King.

California kings are 72 inches wide by 84 inches long. Eastern Kings are 76 inches wide by 80 inches long. This few inch difference may not seem like a lot, but it can make seriously impact the way you and your partner sleep.

California Kings get crowded fast if your children or pets snuggled up vertically with you and your partner. Eastern Kings, on the other hand, offer a bit more room side-to-side. This makes California Kings ideal for having a pet sleep on the foot of your bed, while Eastern Kings are better suited to have your furry visitor sleep vertically.

Sheets and Other Accessories

Eastern King mattresses are much more common than California King mattresses. This is also true for sheets, pillows, and other bedding accessories. This probably doesn’t seem that important at first. After all, that’s why online megastores like Amazon or eBay exist, right?

Yes and no. You’ll be able to find sheets, comforters, pillows, bed frames, box springs, and other California King accessories easier online than in a store. They’re going to be more expensive than an Eastern King, though.

This becomes especially true when considering luxury sheets (the age old cotton vs synthetic debate), high quality bedframes, and other, more expensive accessories.

The Size and Style of Your Bedroom

Another important factor to consider is the size of your bedroom itself. While this isn’t technically a difference between a California or an Eastern King, it will play a large part in which mattress you choose.

If your bedroom is longer and narrower, then a California King will look and function better than a regular. If your bedroom is wider, then you’ll probably want an Eastern King. A good rule of thumb is that you should keep a minimum of two feet of space between your mattress and any walls.

You’ll also want to think about the style of your bedroom. Because Eastern Kings are wider, they look fuller than their west coast counterpart. This is perfect if you’re going for a comfortable, homey bedroom.

California Kings are considered a bit sleeker. They’re perfect if you’re going for a more spare or modern look. This is especially true if you pair the California King with modern bedroom furniture.
